This week, Marc Jacobs returned to the New York Public Library to present his autumn/winter 2022 collection, choosing again to show away from the official NYFW schedule. The designer recruited supermodel sisters Bella and Gigi Hadid to walk in the show, where they strutted their stuff in enormous platforms, elbow-length gloves, layered knitwear and duvet dresses. In fact, some of the most raved-about spring 2022 shows (when I looked in real time on the handles of fashion insiders—particularly buyers) skewed towards this more minimalistic and understated approach. One of the most wearable trends to come out of this round of runways was the pleated skirt, and while there was a light scattering of mini incarnations reminiscent of this summer’s favourite tennis skirt, for SS22 it’s all about the pleated midi. Other than that, there really are no rules. Printed, plain, colourful, monochrome, paired with knits or paired with a bralette – as long as it’s pleated then you’re bang on the money. Pleated skirts may be midi for next season, but all others are raising the hemlines to minuscule lengths. These are minis that the supermodels of the ’90s would’ve been proud to wear, with well over half of the thigh exposed beneath the brief slip of fabric. Blunt Bob, Bobs are nothing new, but if it seems like celebs are going shorter this year, it’s because they are. Hairstylist Ashley Streicher, who just joined R+Co’s Collective, says her clients are asking for “shorter and bolder” cuts. She recently chopped Mandy Moore’s hair into a messy, blunt bob that’s super trendy this season. “I find that people are liking a heavier, more blunt look this spring,” she explains. “I love a really blunt, perfect cut, that when not styled at all, still makes a statement. It’s a perfect cut that’s worn a bit messier.”
As if we needed any more confirmation that the Nineties are the current decade of inspiration, Virginie Viard paid tribute to Karl Lagerfeld’s supermodel-studded catwalks of the decade with a show that recreated the traditional runway setting, complete with photographers leaning onto the catwalk. The collection – which was filled with Nineties swimwear and Clueless-inspired skirt suits – was an ode to the creative director who came before her.
